Dear World: Waitin for the DJ is Taking a Little Break

It's been a little over three years I think since Waitin for the DJ first popped up on the interwebs. Since then, we've garnered an ungodly number of hits, begun receiving submissions from prominent and obscure artists across the world, and seen advertisers come and go and come again.

Throughout that entire history, we've never had to take a break or miss a week of new tracks and videos from all those artists and more until now. The fact of the matter is that I'm heading to graduate school in Arizona and don't foresee any freetime in my future. I'm already at a loss for time to post stuff on the blog.

So thanks for all the love thus far. Check back every once in a while - I'm keeping all the links active so you can scour the archives for your favorite videos and material from the past. Besides, you never know, I might just decide to pop back up one day.

I know I've been slow on the posting recently, but this one couldn't get passed up.

Em and Royce prove that lyricism hasn't been completely abandoned in popular hip-hop. The most interesting thing about this collaboration is the fact that for years I've been hearing people diss Eminem, saying he stole his style completely from Royce Da 5'9". Instead of generating some sort of stupid regular-issue beef between the two though, their similar styles have brought them together for a joint project.

Summer 2011 is the season of dream collaborations. Allegedly, Watch the Throne - the Jay & Ye collabo - is set to finally drop on July 4. Keep your ears open.

R.I.P. Gil Scott Heron

Gil Scott Heron, considered by some to be the "Godfather of Rap", passed away this morning.

There's lots to say about Gil, but I'm not necessarily the one to say it. He was a musician, poet, revolutionary, artist, leader, and more. His body of work spans decades, genres, and meanings.

BBC writer Peter Jackson (no, not the Lord of the Rings guy) sums up Heron's work and life as well as any in his BBC obituary. You can read it below, but first take a listen to some of Gil's more recent work alongside Nas.

When Gil Scott-Heron re-emerged a few years ago from a long period of musical exile, his acclaimed new album led to a reappraisal of his work and influence.

As he turned 60, the American author, poet, and musician was once again thrust into the public eye as he released his solo recording, I'm New Here, and follow-up remix album.

Remembered for his poetry set to melodic jazz and soulful protest songs in the 1960s and 70s, he was an unmistakable influence on an emerging generation of rappers and hip hop artists.

Yet he was quick to reject some of the more grandiose epithets such as the "Godfather of rap" and "the black Bob Dylan".

It was typical of the discerning, lanky artist who shunned the limelight.

"He had a fierce intelligence and a way with words which was untouchable; an incredible sense of humour and a gentleness and humanity that was unique to him," said Richard Russell, the head of XL Records who signed him and produced his last album.

The artist's father, Gil Heron, was known as "the Black Arrow" at Celtic
"Gil shunned all the trappings of fame and success. He could have had all those things. But he was greater than that. He seemed wholly uninterested in money."

Born in 1949, Scott-Heron was the son of a Jamaican footballer who was the first black man to play for Glasgow's Celtic FC.

He was raised by his mother and grandmother in Jackson, Tennessee, where he discovered the verse of the black poet Langston Hughes whilst at college - an obvious early influence.

In an interview with BBC 6 Music last year, Scott-Heron recalled: "My grandmother bought a piano for about $8, I think it was. I began to listen to the radio and try to pick out what they were playing by ear.

"There were a lot of blues progressions that I was able to give some life to on the piano, there, and I enjoyed it very much."

In 1968, aged 19, he wrote his most famous work, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, a satirical spoken-word piece released on Small Talk at 125th by a small label two years later.

A kind of oral blog from the projects, it became a phrase which would enter the language and lead on to pop music about the inequities of apartheid.

Other songs addressed poverty and racism as well as contemporary issues such as nuclear power (We Almost Lost Detroit) and celebrity (Show Bizness).

By 23, he had published two novels and a book of poems and recorded three albums.

He also successfully campaigned alongside fellow artists Stevie Wonder and Bob Marley for a US public holiday to be named in honour of civil rights campaigner Martin Luther King.

Public Enemy's Chuck D said: "Gil Scott-Heron was one of the foundations that rappers could perform themselves off of.

"I think a lot of it happened with the word, the meaning and the definition - or the redefinition - of the words he used, but also the pacing.

"Mr Heron delivered his words with a feeling and with a rhythm that was a great basis for rap. It was a fundamental start for rap to trigger itself from."

Scott-Heron's repertoire included tracks about addiction such as Down Some Dead-end Street There Ain't No Turning Back and The Bottle, which mirrored his own struggle.

In 2001, he was jailed in New York State for cocaine possession and in 2006 for violating a plea deal on a drug-possession charge by leaving a rehabilitation clinic.

It was while he was doing time that Scott-Heron received a visit from Richard Russell, who guided him into the studio for his comeback album.

Russell said in a tribute on his blog: "To my knowledge he never accepted an award. He always wanted everyone else to receive credit for their work.

"He is the only artist I've ever worked with who requested that the studio engineer's photo be given equal prominence to his own on his website.

"Gil meant a massive amount to me, as he did to so many people. His talent was immense. He was a master lyricist, singer, orator, and keyboard player.

"His spirit was immense. He channeled something that people derived huge benefit from."

This is pretty awesome though. I'm not a huge fan of N.E.R.D., but they definitely have a huge influence on music. For Skateboard P to take that influence and apply it to something like education and getting kids excited about science is an example of the power that artists can wield for good. Love it or hate it, these kids will listen to him. That's amazing.

Lupe Fiasco: "Words I Never Said" Video Sneak Peek

I'm not a fan of Lupe's LASERS album. Too much hype led to a final product that was more pop than hip-hop. However, I haven't totally ruled out the fact that it was at least partially orchestrated by him.

We know he didn't set out to make a pop disc - he said himself that Atlantic Records forced all but 4 of the beats and hooks on him - but maybe he consciously rolled with it. It's not that hard to believe that he allowed himself to make radio-friendly pop jams to get heard on the radio, but still laced the lyrics with poignant, politically/socially-charged lyrics for the kids to hear. It's actually a pretty good plan to get conscious music heard.

It's just as easy to believe, unfortunately, that he made the pop to reach the airwaves, and laid out some rebellious bars to further built hype around the "controversy" of his lyrics and sell more albums to get that platinum status that he's been talking about deserving since his first album dropped. We just don't really know. Can't know. But it doesn't really matter, because regardless of what he intended or let happen, the fact remains that the quality of LASERS is extremely low grade.

He scrapped his earlier album concept, LupE.N.D., and switched it to LASERS because it was too similar to a project that the Black Eyed Peas were working on at the time called The END. What he didn't realize was that he still ended up making a Peas album.

That being said, "Words I Never Said" has some powerful lyrics - despite the teeny bopper hook. It's one of two songs from the album that I genuinely enjoy - alongside "All Black Everything".

The "Words I Never Said" video is set to drop tonight, but if you're a real hip-hop fan, you probably won't be sitting up all night on MTV to catch the debut. So here's a 30 second preview to give you a little taste before you look it up online tomorrow.

A Note to Everyone Submitting to Waitin for the DJ

What's up producers, promoters, MCs, DJs, and whomever else has been awesome enough to continue to send in email submissions to the blog! Thanks to you guys & gals, we're able to stay up-to-date on the best of the underground.

I've gotten a lot of positive feedback from artists and their teams and I want to increase that. However, I've also gotten a few emails over the years from people who were upset that I didn't post their stuff. If nothing else, I admire the persistence! In case you were wondering, here's my process for reviewing submissions...

1. Open the email, read whatever's written.
2. Check out links to streaming songs, albums, or videos.
3. Decide whether or not I like it - I'm definitely not pretending to be objective in this whole process. This site started as my own personal music blog and evolved into something bigger. But the stuff shown is still just the stuff that I enjoy.
4. Either post it or don't.

You might have noticed that I DIDN'T mention downloading anything. That's because I don't ever download stuff blindly! That includes music submissions and every other email. Didn't your friendly IT guy ever tell you not to download something if you don't know what it is? Unless I can hear it first and I really dig it, then I'm not messing around with mp3, zip, wav, or any other formats on my hard drive.

So if you aren't seeing your stuff up on the blog, it might be because you aren't giving me a chance to listen to the music before subjecting my computer to the gamble of downloading! (Also, my hard drive is chock full to the limit! I just genuinely don't have the space to preview through downloads.)

So, sorry if you've been sending download links only with no way for me to preview and you aren't getting your stuff out there through this site because of it. Not trying to hate, just thought I should let everybody know (some people have already gotten this message through email, but I figured I'd make it public).

Bottom line: I want to hear your music! So send me youtube, vimeo, bandcamp, personal websites, other blog posts, whatever! Just as long as I can check it out risk free.

So if you've been following the blog recently, you've seen my excitement over leaks of clips of the Beastie Boys' 30 minute film, "Fight For Your Right Revisited".

First, there was the preview cut, which gave you a two minute taste of what was to come. Check that out HERE.

Then, there came the "Make Some Noise" music video that dropped yesterday, which was comprised of clips from the film. Catch it HERE.

Finally, we get to see the full video. Check it out in all its glory below. The cast and cameos in this are amazing. I didn't see a shot of a single person who wasn't famous. The Beasties must have called in a lot of favors on this one. (They even make appearances themselves as the cops at the end.)
